Drug dealer arrested after death of couple

A man suspected of selling drugs that resulted in the deaths of two people in Sheffield Beach last month has been arrested.

A foreign national, Fernando Ogbonna was arrested on Tuesday January 31 at the Mkhize’s Tuck shop informal settlement in Sheffield, by members of the Durban Organised Crime Unit.

Residents living near the informal Mkhize's Tuckshop settlement in Sheffield Beach have called for authorities to clean up the area after a drug dealer was arrested.

A spokesperson from the Crime Unit has confirmed that the man has been linked to the deaths of Tamryn Coetzer Walsh (33) and Garth Kyle (29) who were found dead on January 21, after a party with friends, at a home in Sheffield. (“Sheffield braai ends in tragedy,” Courier, January 27.)

A member of the Unit said that post mortem results showed the cause of death for both Walsh and Kyle was a heart attack.

“The more crucial toxicology results will take more time.”

He said drug dealer Ogbonna, who was arrested and has appeared in court, was merely a link in the chain of illegal drug use.

“His phone number was known to local users who would phone in their order and collect their drug of choice within an hour. This guy made a small profit on each deal and the big money goes elsewhere.”

The unit member also said that the same dealer had sold more of the drug to more people after selling to the buyer from Sheffield and they had suffered no ill effects.

The man who was arrested lives in the informal settlement in Sheffield, known as Mkhizes Tuck-shop and he remains under arrest.
