Sheffield dumpsite an unsightly mess

The dumpsite contains mostly builders' rubble and some garden refuse. It is located on the MR474, near Sheffield Beach.

A dirt road near Sheffield Beach has become a dumping ground for unwanted building rubble, rubbish and garden refuse.

Located halfway down the MR474 which links Sheffield Beach with Umhlali and the Salt Rock Road, the dirt road travels into sugarcane. Five hundred metres in and the road has become a dumping site with everything from broken pieces of tar from roads to builders’ unwanted rubble to garden refuse. Hidden by the thick overgrowth, several mounds of rubbish pile up over half a metre high in various spots. The ground has been visibly damaged by large trucks entering and exiting the site.

The road was chained off but appears to have been cut open.

“If builders and construction companies knew that they could legally drop off their rubble free of any charge, most would prefer to do the right thing and dispose of the rubble responsibly,” said Dolphin Coast Conservancy’s chair Di Jones.

Ballito Crushers accepts building rubble which does not have any steel running through it, and utilise the crushed material.
